Drilling operations in Polar Regions and mountainous areas are complicated by extremely low temperature at the surface and inboard of the glaciers, glacier flow, absence of the roads and infrastructures, storm winds, snowfalls. Considering the power consumption and the weight of conventional rotary drilling rigs, they are difficult applicable for glacial exploration. Therefore, the main activities of the Center are focused on developing of a special purpose-built drilling equipment for drilling in ice sheets, ice caps, mountain glaciers, ice shelves, frozen rocks, subglacial bedrock and sub-ice sediments. The Center is developing a wide range of coring and non-coring drills, auxiliary equipment, and can provide drilling expertise needed by the Polar science.
