Informational Meeting in Alfred-Wegener Institute (AWI)
Bremerhaven, Germany
14-15 October, 2011
Meeting took part in the Alfred Wegener Institute and was intended to discuss a broad range of PRC and AWI contributions at designing, testing and utilizing of ice-drilling systems. Frank Wilhelms showed ice drilling tools available in-hand and also talked about recent development of intermediate depth ice-coring system. Pavel Talalay gave a report “Drilling Project at Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains (Eastern Antarctica)”. In the meeting, there was an increased focus on how to establish cooperation in deferent areas of Polar researches, especially, in the drilling project in the region of Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains. It was concluded that to fulfill the project AWI can provide limited funding, professional scientists, and tools for different kind of ice core researches.
50th Mining Příbram Symposium
Příbram, Czech Republic
7-14 October, 2011
The Mining Příbram symposia have been organized since 1962, since 1992 with specialized international sections on geoethics (application of ethics in the fields of Earth sciences), regularly - usually in 2-years periods. The symposium took place in Příbram, a city in the Central Bohemian Region with glory mining history. Silver and iron mines are known here from late 16th century and survived to present days. Two PRC members (Pavel Talalay and Dahui Yu) took part in the symposium with presentation: “Geoethical problems of direct Antarctic subglacial lakes access”.
11th International Symposium on Antarctic Earth Sciences (ISAES XI)
Edinburgh, UK
10-16 July, 2011
The International symposium on Antarctic Earth Sciences (ISAES) is a SCAR-initiative aimed at showcasing Antarctic geoscience research, taking stock of the accomplishments of the International fraternity and providing guidance for future studies. The First ISAES was organized way back in 1963 at Cape Town. ISAES XI took place at the John McIntyre Conference Centre in Edinburgh and the University of Edinburgh’s Halls of Residence. Four PRC members (Pavel Talalay, Chen Chen, Pinlu Cao, and Dahui Yu) took part in the symposium with presentations:
1. “Estimation of the thermal conditions on the Antarctic ice sheet bed due to measured temperature profiles in deep holes”
2. “Comparison of the proposed technologies for subglacial Antarctic lakes accessing”
3. “Drilling project at Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains (Eastern Antarctica)”
IDDO Technical Advisory Board meeting 2011
Madison, USA
20-21 April, 2011
In order to have the best available advice in regard to drill innovation, design, and operation, Ice Drilling Design and Operations Group (IDDO), University of Wisconsin – Madison has established a Technical Advisory Board (TAB) in 2009. The purpose of the TAB is to provide IDDO with expert advice on its activities. More specifically, to identify needed improvements in existing drilling technology and new drilling technology; recommend priorities for the activities of IDDO; bring fresh ideas to ice drilling technology from a broad base in drilling and related expertise and experience outside glaciology; provide critical commentary on IDDO's ongoing activities; respond to technical questions and requests for advice raised by IDDO staff. The TAB membership consists of 10-12 members who represent a wide range of areas in drilling and related technologies. TAB members participate in person in an annual meeting. Pavel Talalay was a member of TAB since founding. Except Pavel Talalay, Baochang Liu and Rusheng Wang from Jilin University took part in TAB meeting 2011. Pavel Talalay gave three presentations: “Vostok Ice Core Drilling Project: Last events”, “Subglacial bedrock drilling: Brief review”, and “Chinese deep drilling projects in Antarctic Ice Sheet”.
