The first Open Science Conference of the International Partnerships in Ice Core Sciences (IPICS)
Presqu’île de Giens, Côte d’Azur, France
1-5 October, 2012
The main aim of IPICS, international programme gathering 25 nations, is to coordinate international collaboration for ice core research of the next several decades. The conference included sessions on the following topics: glacial-interglacial climate dynamics during the last 1.5 million years, new frontiers in ice core retrieval and analysis, biogeochemical cycles and others. Five PRC members (Pavel Talalay, Alexey Markov, Nan Zhang, Xiaopeng Fan, Dahui Yu) attended conference with following presentations:
1. “Study of elastic properties of ice using optic fiber sensors”
2. “Layered interpretation of Antarctic ice sheet dynamics”
3. “Ice mass balance and dynamics changing of Antarctic ice sheet as the result of open accessing of isolated subglacial reservoirs”
Informational meeting in British Antarctic Survey (BAS)
Cambridge, UK
27-28 September, 2012
The meeting was aimed to exchange ideas for engineering activities in Antarctica, especially, for projects related to Antarctic ice shelves and subglacial lakes investigations with hot-water drilling systems. Pavel Talalay gave a report “Chinese hot-water ice drilling project”. Keith Makinson, Andy Tait, Andy Webb, Mark Preston, Chris Hill, and David Blake shared results and plans for BAS hot water drilling activities and researches on sub-ice shelf oceanography. Attendees visited vehicles garage, marine aquarium, ice core labs, and Cortland Fibron factory in Hoddesdon producing umbilicals, cables, and hoses. The meeting provided the ideal opportunity for BAS and Chinese scientists and engineers to discuss directions for future cooperation.
2012 SCAR Open Science Conference
Portland, USA
15-19 July, 2012
The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research is an interdisciplinary committee of the International Council for Science, charged with initiating, developing, and coordinating international scientific research in the Antarctic region. Open Science Conference was focused on the study of Antarctica, the Southern Ocean, and their role in the Earth system. The region is experiencing changes that are global in scope, making it a rich laboratory for transformational research, important in its own right and impossible to achieve elsewhere on the planet. The conference was hosted by Portland State University. Pavel Talalay represented PRC on the conference with following presentations:
1. “A new interpretation of Antarctic Ice Sheet flow process”
2. “Thermobaric conditions in Antarctic subglacial reservoirs”
3. “Semi-automatic sonde for clean accessing and sampling subglacial aquatic ecosystems”
Informational meeting in University of Wisconsin
Stoughton, USA
12-13 July, 2012
The meeting was focused on the designing, testing and utilization of hot-water drilling systems. The meeting took place at the University of Wisconsin Physical Sciences Lab (UW-PSL). Pavel Talalay gave general remarks for Chinese ice hot-water drilling project. Yuansheng Li (PRIC) gave a report “Chinese prospect for ice hot-water drilling”. UW-PSL experts (Jeff Cherwinka, Lee Greenler, and Terry Benson) talked about the world’s largest hot water drill, IceCube’s Enhanced Hot Water Drill designed and built at UW-PSL. They shared ideas of what has worked, and what might make a next generation drill better. Meeting at UW-PSL allowed to view also some hot water drilling equipment, testing and training facility.
IDDO Technical Advisory Board meeting 2012
Madison, USA
24-25 April, 2012
The meeting was attended by all TAB members, IDDO staff, two guests from the Polar Research Center at Jilin University (Zhichuan Zheng and Pinlu Cao) and others, including NSF Program Manager. IDDO presented on the current status of field projects and current equipment status and gained valuable feedback from board members on equipment development projects. Pavel Talalay gave five presentations:
1. “Russian drillers reached Subglacial Lake Vostok”
2. “Deep drilling at Dome A started”
3. “Proposed drilling project at Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains”
4. “Potential ice drilling fluids”
5. “Wire-line drilling in ice”
