2016 SCAR Open Science Conference
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
22-26 August, 2016
The main theme of the conference was “Antarctica in the Global Earth System: From the Poles to the Tropics”. The events were attended by 955 delegates from 43 countries including scientists, researchers, policy makers representing scientific organizations, research institutes, universities and scientific bodies from all over the world. The Open Science Conference had 41 sessions with 434 oral presentations and 349 poster presentations. Three teachers from PRC (Pavel Talalay, Nan Zhang, and Xiaopeng Fan) attended conference with following presentations:
1. “Recoverable autonomous thermal sonde for in-situ dating of glacier ice”
2. “Power supply considerations for environmental friendly exploration of Antarctic subglacial lakes using autonomous sonde RECAS”
3. “Environmental considerations of ice-core drilling technology in Antarctica”
4. “Drilling project at Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains, East Antarctica: Recent progress and plans for the future”
11th International Conference on Permafrost (ICOP)
Potsdam, Germany
20-24 June, 2016
This conference is part of a long tradition – the first ICOP took place in 1963. The conference allowed participants to share their results and update their understanding of what is now a broad field within earth system science and engineering. Over 739 participants from 36 nations attended the conference. Pavel Talalay was a lead convener of the session “Permafrost problems in mineral, oil and gas exploration and production”.
XVI Glaciological Symposium
St Petersburg, Russia
24-27 May, 2016
The Symposium was organized by Glaciological Association, Institute of Geography of theRussian Academy of Sciences, and Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute with the main theme “Past, Present, and Future of The Earth Cryosphere”. The Symposium covered a wide range of cryospheric topics and presentations described results of recent investigations devoted to the key issues of present-day glaciology including recent climate and glacier changes, polar glaciers and global sea level, proxy paleoclimate reconstructions and history of glacier changes. Prof. Pavel Talalay gave a talk “Chinese Ice-Core Drilling Projects in East Antarctica towards new findings on paleoclimate reconstruction and ice sheet dynamics”.
2nd Open Science Conference of the International Partnerships in Ice Core Sciences (IPICS)
Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
6-11 March, 2016
The conference was hosted by the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre (ACE CRC) and the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD). IPICS consists of ice core scientists, engineers, and drillers from the leading laboratories and national operators carrying out ice core science. The conference covered a wide range of topics related to all aspects of ice core science, including recent drilling projects. Five members of PRC (Pavel Talalay, Rusheng Wang, Nan Zhang, Yang Yang, Jialin Hong) attended conference with following presentations:
1. “Recent progress on Chinese deep ice-core drilling project at Dome A”
2. “Multi-functional cold workshop for ice drilling tests”
3. “Rapid intermediate ice drilling technology with air reverse-circulation”
4. “Ice and subglacial bedrock PDM corer with the use of hot-water drill system”
5. “The SUBGLACIOR drilling probe: hydraulic considerations”
6. “Ice and Bedrock Electromechanical Drill (IBED): Control, electronics and electrical design”
7. “Optimization of ice cuttings transportation by electromechanical auger drills”
8. “The recent progress on drilling project in the region of Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains, East Antarctica”
9. “Temperature distribution of the normal drilling fluid circulation in deep ice boreholes and its influence on drilling technology”
