In August 2024, the Institute for Polar Science and Engineering of Jilin University sent members to participate in the 11th Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research -2024 Open Science Conference held in Pucon, Chile. At the conference, we conducted academic exchanges with participating scientists from various countries on cutting-edge polar science issues such as deep polar ice and subglacial bedrock drilling and sampling technology equipment, subglacial geological environment, ice sheet formation and evolution, and introduced the current development progress of polar drilling technology in China through academic reports and exchanges. Learn the advanced experience of major polar scientific research countries in the research and development of drilling technology and equipment, subglacial exploration technology, and analysis of subglacial geological characteristics.

        At the academic conference, Professor Pavel Talalay, Professor Zhang Nan and Prof.Wang Rusheng delivered oral reports respectively, and Senior Engineer Yang Yang, Engineer Wang Ting and doctoral students presented posters. During the conference, the team members also had an academic exchange with the team of the All-Russian Institute of Marine Geology and Mineral Resources of Russia. At the academic exchange meeting, Jilin University exchanged and discussed with the team of China University of Geosciences (Beijing) and the All-Russian Institute of Marine Geology and Mineral Resources of Russia on the cooperation between China and Russia during the 2024-2025 Antarctic scientific expedition season. Jilin university reported the research progress of drilling and logging technology and equipment as well as the logistics support requirements. The Russian side reported on the research progress and cooperation mode of subglacial bedrock, China and Russia initially formulated the cooperation mode of the future Antarctic working season, discussed the details of the guarantee, and reached a consensus intention, and the exchange with the Russian was fruitful. The conference achieved fruitful academic exchange results, had a deeper understanding of the interdisciplinary integration of Antarctica, studied and exchanged international advanced polar drilling technology, and demonstrated the advanced achievements of Jilin university in a variety of advantageous fields of polar drilling technology and equipment and breakthroughs made in Antarctic exploration. The study and exchange of advanced scientific issues in polar glaciology, advanced science and technology in subglacial geological exploration and advanced technical means in subglacial environment observation were carried out.
